UNSW Foundation Studies Entry Requirements

There are certain academic and English language and requirements:

Academic - usually at least an average grade in academic subjects.

English - if your previous study has not been in an English-language medium you normally need to take a recognised English language test such as IELTS or TOEFL.

UNSW Foundation Studies is now registered as a test site for the new TOEFL iBT.

Our address is:
UNSW Foundation Studies
223 Anzac Parade
Kensington
(opposite New College)

A TOEFL book giving information about the timeline for results and free practice tests, is available at the Foundation Studies Reception Office on Level 1.

To register for the examination, please go to: www.ets.org/toefl/learners/ibt/register.html

Students requiring extra English language tuition can enrol at UNSW’s Institute of Languages.

UNSW Pathway Packages are available. The packages provide you with a seamless study pathway between UNSW Institute of Languages (if required), UNSW Foundation Year and UNSW undergraduate degree programs.

The major advantage of our Pathway Package is the possibility of obtaining one visa to cover your whole period of study. This means that you no longer need to extend visas between study programs, which considerably reduces the cost of visa processing.

A 10 week pre-Foundation English Plus Program is also available for students with moderate English proficiency and an
IELTS 5.0 or equivalent grade. See academic calendar for dates and The Study Program for fees.

Obtaining a Student Visa

Under Australian Government regulations, all international students enrolled at Australian universities are required to hold a valid visa.

After you receive your letter of offer and pay your tuition fees and Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), you will receive a Confirmation of Enrolment (COE). You may then proceed to apply for a student visa by contacting the Australian Diplomatic Mission in your country or one of our Representative Offices.

If you are already in Australia, you may extend your current visa by sending a Visa Application Form 157Y and supporting documents directly to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC), NSW Student Centre at 26 Lee Street, Sydney. A complete checklist of documents which need to be sent can be obtained from their Administration Office or by telephoning the NSW Student Centre Enquiry Line - 131881.

Health Cover (OSHC)

The Australian Government requires that, as part of their visa requirements, all international students pay health insurance in Australia through the Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) Scheme.

There are 4 registered providers of OSHC and UNSW's preferred provider is OSHC Worldcare.

If you decide to purchase your OSHC from the University's preferred provider, you can arrange it yourself or through Foundation Studies when paying your tuition fees. If you ask us to arrange it for you, we will receive a commission which is used to improve services to students.

If you decide to purchase your OSHC from one of the other providers, you will not be financially disadvantaged but you must arrange it directly with the provider yourself. The other OSHC providers are: BUPA Australia Health, Medibank Private and Australian Health Management (ahm).

Please note: Membership of health insurance schemes in your home country does not exempt you from paying the OSHC.
