As a UNSW Foundation Year student you can take advantage of the full range of support services offered to all students at UNSW, such as the Library, medical centre, bank facilities, the University Gym and a spiritual centre.

UNSW Foundation Year is located in a brand new building near the main university entrance. Here you can meet the student advisers, or meet fellow students in the student lounge, and collect timetables and various forms from Reception.

You can use the computer laboratory facilities for private research, and to keep in touch with family and friends via the Internet.

A café in the courtyard serves light meals.

Student Advisers

Dedicated Student Advisers are on hand to help look after your welfare. They are experienced and understand what it is like to live and study in another country.

Academic and Career Advice

The Student Advisers arrange information sessions and your placement into the undergraduate stage of study. You also have the opportunity to meet with UNSW Faculty staff to discuss your choice of undergraduate program. You are provided with a "Guide for University Entry" detailing the program requirements of over thirty Australian Universities that you can choose from. You may also choose to study at some of the international universities in Canada, the United States, United Kingdom or New Zealand that accept Foundation Year qualifications as part of their entry requirements.

Student Advisers also help with confidential advice and information on personal, social or academic issues, such as:

• accommodation issues, e.g. settling into accommodation, getting on with flatmates,
  sharing responsibility;
• health care issues, e.g. making proper use of the Overseas Health Cover;
• immigration issues, e.g. extensions of visas, obtaining work permits;
• personal concerns, e.g. study, friends, money, family;
• undergraduate information, e.g. what program to study at the undergraduate
  stage, grades needed, any specific assumed;
• knowledge or requirements; and
• study skills and coping with exams.

The Student Advisers also help you settle into your new way of life by organising:

Orientation Activities

For the three days following official enrolment, all new UNSW Foundation Year students attend an Orientation program that not only explains what is required during the coming year, but also provides an opportunity to form friendships with other students. Students also go together on a City Tour around the landmarks of Sydney, a fun way to socialise with new friends.

At Orientation, important information is given regarding:
• classes
• timetables
• adjusting to a new study environment
• visas
• banking
• health cover

• finding permanent accommodation

The Accommodation Officer

The Accommodation Officer looks after our students who are under 18 years of age who do not live with an approved relative. She also organizes an airport reception and transfer service when you first arrive in Sydney, if required, as well as short-term accommodation. She also helps you find suitable permanent accommodation.

Class Representatives

Class Representatives are elected by their fellow students to help promote effective communication between teachers, student advisers and students. They assist the student advisers with:

• organising social activities;
• organising sports teams; and
• collecting contributions to student newsletters.

On-going Social Activities

Students Helping Students

There are thousands of new international students who enter UNSW every year and there are many groups on campus to help them settle in. One support network is called ‘Learning the Lingo’. This is a social support network for Foundation Year and other university students and is a fantastic way to meet new people and share new cultures and customs. Students meet at lunchtime and in the afternoon during term time. Barbecues, movie nights and visits in and around Sydney are also arranged.

‘Unibuddies’ is a program to support and assist Foundation students, academically, socially and culturally. Previous Foundation students who are currently studying at UNSW offer support and guidance to new students. Students meet either in groups or on a one-to-one basis.

Study Skills Seminars provide useful information to all students. They are offered each semester and cover such topics as stress management, time management, revision and exam techniques and how to prepare a study timetable.

The Sports Association has 40 clubs that train and participate in competitions throughout the year. The activities are usually on or near the campus and cost less than outside clubs. They are a great way to meet a lot of people with the same interests as yourself and you stay fit and healthy as well.

Clubs and Societies - You are bound to find a club you like, whatever your interest may be – Japanese animation, debating, theatre, science fiction, politics, the environment…And if not, you can start your own! You only need 15 members to start your own club. There are currently around 250 clubs and societies on campus and the number is constantly increasing. The clubs serve students’ diverse social, cultural, political and religious interests.
