Important UNSW Global Under 18 Information

Australian Government regulations (National Code) and DIAC (student visa conditions) require students underage age 18 to have appropriate accommodation and welfare arrangements .

When a student is offered a place for Pre Foundation Year English course (PFY), English for Academic Purposes courses (EAP) or UNSW Foundation Year (UFY), UNSW Global must ensure that either the parent/s or legal custodian will accompany the student to Australia or nominate a relative aged over 21 years of age to live and reside with the student that has been approved by DIAC. In every other case, UNSW Global will approve the (CAAW) care arrangements for underage students as required by DIAC and the National Code.

Students accepting an offer for PFY, EAP or UFY may choose one of the care arrangement options acceptable to the Australian Commonwealth Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC). The law specifies that students under 18 must either:

Option 1: Reside in Australia with a parent, custodian, or a relative aged 21 and over of good character nominated by either parent or the person having custody of them approved by DIAC, or

Option 2: Provide evidence that they will be going into care arrangements—for their accommodation, support and general welfare—approved by the education provider for the course in which
they are enrolled (CAAW).

Under Option 2, when UNSW Global signs the CAAW required for student visa processing, we are taking on an important responsibility by confirming to DIAC that appropriate arrangements have been made for the student’s accommodation, support and general welfare. The fee for these arrangements is a CAAW setup fee of $400 plus an additional $10 per week for every week the student remains under 18 years of age during EAP, PFY and/or whilst at UFY.

UNSW Global has procedures in place to ensure that the responsibilities it undertakes in signing CAAW letters to underage students are fulfilled. UNSW Global procedures specify that underage students who are issued with a CAAW letter must agree:

a) to stay in an accommodation arrangement approved by UNSW Global until he/she turns 18 years of age. If the student is in homestay, a UNSW Global staff member will visit the homestay home and meet with the host family to ensure the accommodation and welfare arrangements are adequate. If the student is residing at UniLodge, a UNSW Global staff member will maintain regular contact with Unilodge staff to ensure the accommodation and welfare arrangements are adequate and ensure that it continues to remain appropriate for the student.

b) to attend regular scheduled meetings with a Student Adviser. These meetings give the student an opportunity to discuss any concerns they may have about their accommodation and host family, academic progress and any other personal issue that may be affecting their wellbeing. UNSW Global will monitor the care arrangements of underage students through regular meetings held with the student by a Student Adviser. UNSW Global will report back to the parents of the underage student if required

.

For details regarding CAAW arrangements and forms to be completed, please answer the question and follow the instructions carefully.
